My Upcycled Chair: "Castiel's 'I Love America' Chair"
The Take A Seat Upcycling Community Art Exhibit was a very cool project in which local artists were selected to decorate chairs set to be discarded and instead give them a second life as upcycled artwork! The theme for the artwork was "America 250." From April 1 through May 1, the finished art pieces were on display at Alexandria Library branches and several local businesses and organizations. My upcycled chair (see pics below) was on exhibit at Del Ray Artisans Gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Avenue; Alexandria, VA 22301). On May 9, all the chairs were returned to Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library (5005 Duke Street; Alexandria, VA 22304) for display, and the library hosted a panel discussion with local artists and art experts to discuss the upcycled chairs and the importance of public art. All the upcycled chairs were available for purchase as part of an online auction while on display, with proceeds benefitting the Alexandria Library Foundation.
